Questions

  1. Dr. Wilcox described techniques for multimedia search. The website www.like.com uses image content analysis to allow the user to search for images that look similar to other images. It accomplishes this by allowing the user to tell the system how to adjust the image to find those that have similar color, shape, and pattern.

Here is an image of a rug that I found on this website:

Experiment with the functionality of this website and find this rug. Describe how you used the website to find this image. To show that you found the target image, click on the "Details" link beneath the image, look at the name of the rug, and write it down as part of the answer to this question.

  2. Do an image search at images.google.com then click on one of the images. Do the same at images.yahoo.com . When you do this, you'll see that the search engine shows the image thumbnail at the top of the page and then places a version of the web page that the image came from in a frame beneath the thumbnail. Given what we learned in Mr. Schultz's lecture, why do the image search engines display the information in this manner?

  3. Mr. Schultz talked about the case of Google vs. Perfect 10. Summarize what the issues were in this case. Why did the court rule in favor of Google?
