Homework due April 19 at 5:00 pm

Late policy: Homework will be accepted for 50% credit up until 5pm Friday, after that it will not be accepted.

Readings:

(Continuation of same readings from last week)

Read Sections 13.1 through 4, 13.9

Optional reading: RSA Laboratories' FAQ is an excellent source of additional information about or clarification of the security techniques discussed in the reader.

Discussion forum:

Please participate in the class discussion forum. Each week discussion issues relative to the material covered in class will be posted. Also, you are free to post your own questions or issues.

To be turned in:

Submitting: Please email homework answers to is106-hmwk@sims before class time on the due date. Also pls put the due date of the homework you are submitting in the Subj heading. Answers in the email body or email attachments in MS Word are acceptable, but please use the file naming convention:

is106s99_hmwk_<your initials>_date.doc

so that we can keep them straight.

Group submission: You are encouraged to work together on the homework in groups of two or three (but no more than three). You can submit a single homework assignment for the group, but be sure to display the names of all group members prominently at the top. The purpose of this is to learn from one another, so do work collaboratively rather than just dividing up the work!

On-line exercise:

Using your usual Web browser, log into a secure site. You can tell it is secure by the lock icon at the bottom of the window. (If you don't have a favorite secure site, try Wells Fargo Banking.) Once there, look at the digital certificate provided by the site to authenticate itself. Who is the certificate authority? For your browser, find the list of all certificate authorities that are trusted by the browser. Is the one above on the list? (How to do this depends on the browser you are using -- use help if necessary.)
