Infosys 101: Information Systems.    Exercise 3:   Introduction to a "Gopher".   Due Feb 11.

WARNING: Gopher searching can be tedious, unreliable, and frustrating!   The following is intended to be self-explanatory, but, if you get stuck or frustrated, stop, try again later and/or ask for help.

A. BASICS.   Use the Berkeley campus Infolib gopher, accessible from library "catalog" terminals or by connecting to the campus network. If needed: Login: Guest; Password: [Enter]. Do not do this exercise through a web-page interface.
Search as follows. (If you get lost, "exit" up to(wards) the main Infolib menu.)
Get into the Infolib Gopher. "Lib" instead of "m" or "g" at any library terminal that allows a choice.
Select 1. About Infolib: The UC Berkeley Library Gopher. (Do 1 then Enter.)
Then select 2. About Gopher. Read it though. At the end you will revert to the menu.
From same menu select 1. About this gopher. Read it.
Return (use "u" for up) to original main Infolib menu and select 8. Infocal, then
Try 2. UCB Directories and phone books. Try Faculty and staff phone listings and search by name for Carol Christ. What position does she hold? -- and what is her telephone number? (Hint: If nothing found press Enter anyway.)
Return to the InfoCal (not Infolib) main menu again (use "u" as often as needed).

B. TOPICAL SEARCH. Use the gopher menus (only, not Veronica), working your way down a hierarchy of menus, to find something of interest to you. What did you find and where? Where is that document located? (Return to the menu that lists it, enter = for address. Write down (i) The "host" computer's name; (ii) The file's name ("URL" = Universal Resource Locator); and (iii) The date and exact time .

C. LEGISLATION. Return to the InfoLib (not InfoCal) main menu again (use "u" as often as needed).
