Big Data Analytics in Display Advertising and Content Personalization

Abstract

What is "big data" and what role is Yahoo playing in this space? In this seminar talk, I will give a brief introduction of Yahoo's products and technology with a focus on Hadoop and related big data tools and applications. I will talk about the economy, policy and algorithms of user modeling in the context of display advertising and content personalization. I'll share my thoughts of the past, presence and future of the so called "big data". And finally, I'll name a number of important challenges still remain in data science and leave some time for open questions.

 

Bio

As the VP Engineering of Yahoo's User Data Analytics, Dr. Xuhui Shao leads an experienced engineering team on the production, processing, analysis and modeling of big data that powers the vast Yahoo web properties, digital apps and the world largest online advertising ecosystem.

 

Before joining Yahoo, Xuhui has spent 12 years leading research and development in computational intelligence, big data systems and software engineering for Fortune 100 companies in various industries from banking, finance, online retailing, healthcare, insurance, marketing, and online advertising. Most recently, he was the CTO of Turn, an online advertising technology company. He has also been very passionate about the dynamic online advertising community and works closely with industry leaders developing data transparency and consumer privacy protection.

 

As the lead inventor and co-inventor of three awarded patents in the areas of advanced analytics and optimization, Xuhui is a recognized expert in harnessing data and transforming analytics into actionable insights and optimization strategies. He earned his bachelor's and master's of science degrees from Tsinghua University, Beijing, and his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Minnesota.
