In modern history, it has been Oakland's decision to install container shipping machinery at the port that has kept it a vibrant port. San Francisco decided not to install the devices so that they could protect their tourist industry. The result can be seen in the photograph, opposite, that shows a container ship leaving the port of Oakland and passing San Francisco as it sails to South Africa.

Daniel: "After watching our container being loaded at the Oakland Port, we raced across the San Francisco Bay Bridge, through the City, and across the Golden Gate Bridge to capture the photo of the Majestic Maersk sailing through. We only had about 20 seconds to spare..." Daniel shipped "Kermit", a 1965 Ser IIa 88" Safari Station Wagon from Oakland, CA to Durban, South Africa to particpate in the "The Golden Jubilee Tour of South Africa" in celebration of Land Rover's 50th anniversary.
