Oakland Arena, opened Nov. 8, 1966.

New teams for the new stadium: basketball and hockey

The first game played in the Oakland Arean was on Nov. 8, 1966, by the California Seals (hockey). The arena became the home of the NBL's Golden State Warriors in 1971. Like the Athletics, the Warriors had been formed in Philadelpha in 1946, and moved to San Francisco in 1962 before crossing the bay nine years later.

It was when the Warriors moved to Oakland that they changed their name to "Golden State" Warriors. The team played in San Jose during the 1996-97 rennovation of the Arena, now called the "New Arena."

The Warriors have won the NBA title three times, in 1947, 1956 and 1975.

That first team to play in the Arena, the California Seals (ice hockey), is long gone. The team entered the NHL in 1967, and moved to Cleveland in 1976, to become the Cleveland Barons. They didn't last long in Cleveland, merging with the Minneapolis Crusaders (formerly of Cleveland) in 1978, becoming part of the Minnesota North Stars. Their home since 1993 is Dallas, as the Dallas Stars.

Modern hockey is represented at the arena by the Oakland Skates, a relatively new roller hockey team.
