Assignment 1: Problem and justification
Research problem and justification

In this assignment you will do the following:

  1. Provide an introductory paragraph that clearly states a research or design problem of interest to you. You should be able to state the "purpose" of your proposed research or design problem in this statement.
  2. Provide text (a few paragraphs) that justifies your research problem.
  3. Provide a description about how you might go about addressing this research or design problem (i.e., Will you build a prototype? Will you perform user testing or interview users or prospective users? Will you collect and/or analyze some data?).
  4. Finally, provide a description of how each member of your group will contribute to the final project. For example, you might plan to work equally on all aspects of the project, or you might apportion different tasks to different people.

As you create this document, consider the following: How do your problem and proposed approach relate specifically to mediated communication? Have you defined your concepts and terms clearly? That is, are they concrete, specific, and free of jargon? Would your justification of this work convince a non-expert that this is worth doing?

Format and due date
Each group should produce one document. It should be 2–3 pages long (double-spaced, 12-point font). Please print and bring two copies to class.
