Fall 2008

Announcements

August 24

Welcome to IS206! Please check this page on a regular basis for the latest announcements.

Please subscribe to the i206 mailing list via the iSchool Intranet or sending email to majordomo@ischool as soon as possible. The mailing list will be used for dissemination of course-related announcements, as well as for unmoderated discussions on course-related topics.

Place-out Exam: Wednesday August 27, 12 noon to 1pm, South Hall 202. The in-class written exam will test fundamental concepts covered in a typical CS curriculum, including: computer architecture, boolean logic, data structures and algorithms, networking, and security. If you have a CS degree, or have advanced CS knowledge, you should consider taking the place-out exam. If you pass this exam, then you are eligible to place out of the course. You will be notified of your exam results by email at or before 6pm. If you pass the place-out exam, you will not need to take the place-in exam. If you do not pass the place-out exam, then you will have to pass the place-in exam in order to be enrolled in the course.

Remember that if you place out of 206, you will still be subject to Plan B of the MIMS Program Technical Requirement, as spelled out in the masters handbook:

https://www.ischool.berkeley.edu/intranet/academics/mastershandbook

In brief, you will need to complete six units of coursework from an approved list of technical courses.

Place-in Exam: Thursday August 28, 3:30pm to Friday August 29, 3:30pm.
The place-in exam will be a 24-hour take-home Java programming proficiency test where you will be asked to write a complete Java program similar in complexity to the "sink-the-dotcom game" in the book Head First Java. You will be allowed to refer to any Java book or online resource such as the Sun Java API reference. You can choose to use a Java IDE such as Eclipse if you wish. You are not allowed to discuss the material with any other person. Submission will be via email (instructions will be provided later) so you don't have to come to campus on Friday.
