Surveillance
Oakland restricts use of surveillance cameras
The Oakland City Council has rejected a proposal that would place security
video cameras in residential neighborhoods. Currently, the city has video
cameras hidden in the Jack London Square. However, the American Civil Liberties
Union is investigating the legality of the cameras. The Oakland Port Authority
had decided 11 years ago to install 110 cameras without soliciting public
input. The existing cameras have the ability to zoom in on objects and
are located inconspicuously in building corners and disguised as light
bulbs. (September 23, 1997)
