Honestly, I wanted to blog about the SJSU SLIS Second Life
campus because a friend of mine was involved in much of the infrastructure creation
for the campus in Second Life. I watched her building Tower Hall several years
ago.

This is an online
learning management portal, with virtual infrastructure built within the social
gaming site, an immersive world called Second Life. The online campus includes
known SJSU landmarks, the SJSU fountain and Tower Hall. There are also other
structures: the island builders' tower and snowing sculpture. The Virtual
Center for Archives and Records Administration (VCARA) Exhibit Plaza is one of
the facilities that made me decide this project is i202 mention worthy. Other
facilties that exist in SLIS' Second Life acreage are:
 the Career Center, Video
Theater, Student Union, Info Desk, Tiki Bar, Teleport Plaza, Community Sandbox,
Stage, and Learning Space Rezzer.

SLIS uses their Second Life campus for online
classroom instruction, libraries, scholarly exhibits, and even faculty offices.
Several projects are sponsored, including a young adult library prototype, lab
space and Sloodleville,
 the
village result of an open-source software and community project that combines learning
management systems with Second Life. (Moodle)

SLIS students use the Second Life campus for various
learning opportunities beyond the traditional classroom experience, including: using
web interfaces and connectivity; professional
services role-play; commerce, marketing and outreach; and personal identity
discovery. The online campus also hosts special interest groups and events.

Professors,
administrators and students are all involved in avatar and infrastructure
creation with Second Life on the SJSU virtual campus. This is an ongoing
project and program that has been active since 2007.
