Tagging with your mind (well, of course, all tagging uses your mind)

According to this article, Microsoft researchers have seen some limited success is reading subjects' minds and extracting some tagging info. That is, when exposed to images of human faces, the subjects' brains fire off in certain areas more so than when shown images of cars, non-human animals, etc. The researchers think that though this is greatly limited and specific at the same time, it shows a possible way to add tag info to images in a more rapid and "automatic" way.

On DEVONthink

And now, a word about DEVONthink. They describe it as a "smart information assistant", although you could think of it as a sort of MyResearchBits.

More lifebits: recording everything makes other people uncomfortable

Here's another attempt at attempt at a MyLifeBits project. He only does it for a week, but he includes his daily conversations as well. He doesn't seem to offer many new insights into the issues surrounding capturing every possible ounce of digital data.

What's Your Worst "Trashing" Story?

In the spirit of David Kirsch's take on trashing strategies: What's your most painful trashing experience? Put another way, what information did you knowingly toss, then realize much later that you really, really wanted it back? I'll get it started with a couple of slightly embarrassing stories ...

"Spaces" Desktop Organization in OS X and Ubuntu

The subject of task-specific workspaces came up today in class - both OS X (since Leopard) and Ubuntu Linux have a relevant feature that allows you to have multiple desktops with different applications open (unlike in the reading, the icons on the desktop stay the same in OS X).

This blog post provides a quick overview of the concept of virtual desktops, their history, and a thoroguh look at how OS X handles the problem (OS X specific info is on page 3).

My PIM solution

I dump every important electronic document I want to store into this open source app.  It indexes them and makes them available wherever I am.

MyLifebits - Memento

This movie is about a man who is searching for his wife's killer -- only he can't remember what has just happened.

It takes on a different context given our discussion of PIM and MyLifeBits

In the spirit of today's lecture topic.
