Farmers Nooning

William Sidney Mount. Farmers Nooning. 1836.

"Farmers Nooning" is one of Mount's most famous genre paintings. The African American, located at the focal point of the picture, is rendered in a detailed, naturalistic manner. This is in vivid contrast to the caricature of African Americans found in many genre paintings and prints of the time. The pose of the African American is reminiscent of the classical Roman sculpture, "The Barberini Faun."
